May is my birthday month and because God has a sense of humor it is also Mental Health Awareness month. I was asked to speak at the Decatur Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated Mother's Day luncheon about mental health issues that moms experience. Of course I jumped at this opportunity.
In full transparency I felt that my dear friend, Meon, wasn't sharing adequate information on what needed to be covered. It wasn't like her at all. I decided that I'd share my postpartum journey and how I managed that period of time in my life. I ordered some merchandise to sell afterwards. Some of my village said that they were going to attend which felt amazing! My mom was coming as well. I felt good about the day. I did find it strange when my brother, Chion called to ask me about the event that morning before I left home. He asked if I cry when I speak about my mental health journey. I told him that there have been times that I tear up but full out crying hasn't happened. He assured me that I'd probably cry at this event. I shared the strange conversation with my mom as we drove to the venue.
Shortly after arriving my son, Jeremy (aka King) walked into the brunch. There were other men there but Jeremy always let me know if he'd be joining me at events. I shared with him the conversation with my brother and asked if that's why Chion thought I'd cry. Jeremy looked genuinely confused saying he hadn't spoken to his uncle. It was weird so I just hugged him and smiled that my mom, my son, and my closest friends had all come to here me speak.
Several things should have clued me in on the fact that I wasn't there to speak. My name wasn't on the program. The program was flying by and there wasn't even a mention of mental health. Other vendors were already set up and selling merchandise but Moe assured me that I didn't need to worry about that until later. As the program was nearing what I considered the end and I hadn't been given additional information I began to think that perhaps there was going to be a smaller event following the brunch. Imagine my surprise when I, Worth It, was honored as a 2026 Champion of Change recipient by the Decatur Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc! My village sure knows how to keep a surprise under wraps! Here's the video of a wonderful surprise. Shout out to The Ladies for being there. Shout out to Moe for the nomination. It felt good to be recognized for my desire to bring awareness to mental health and mental illness. What an absolute honor!
